What is PET SCAN?
Pet stands for positron emission tomography. A multimodality PET/CT system is a physical combination of PET and CT, which allows sequential acquisition of the pet and CT portions.
Why PET scan is used?
Pet scan is used for diagnosing cancer and its staging and also used for response assessment for cancer treatment.
How PET scan work?
In PET scan a radiotracer is injected into the vein of patient and after injection patient has to wait for 45-60 min in which patient have to drink sufficient amount of water, and after waiting time patient is taken for PET CT scanner which usually takes around 10-15 min. during the scan and iv contrast agent is administered to the patient (if needed).During the scan, you lie on a flatbed without any movement.
After the scan
The patient can go home same day after some time of observation. After scan patient shouldn’t experience any side effects.
